The Sandhya hotel is a luxury boutique 9 roomed property on the beach in Ahangama, Sri Lanka. About 2.5 hours from Colombo, 3 in traffic, but only 2 hours drive from the airport. The owner Alan Tan offers clean, contemporary rooms with thoughtful details and care for the environment. After being taken aback at the ridiculous amount of water bottles being given away at some large hotels recently, I was so happy to find somewhere doing the opposite. Each room has a glass bottle that is filled with filtered water daily which are also provided at your sun loungers for free too. Not a plastic straw in sight, a metal straw instead. In addition, there are no ridiculous buffets with a greedy amount of food that I am sure would go to waste. Instead a beautiful fruit plate for two delivered to your table and then you select what hot breakfast you would like.

The food  was delicious and Alan was on hand at the time to make sure it was always delivered perfectly. My favourite dishes were the Sri Lankan omelette for breakfast, the Tom Yum Noodles and Butter Chicken for dinner and the salads at lunch. The kitchen also don’t mind little amends and will also order in fresh seafood for you on request if you wish to have say, Lobster one night. If you want to step away from the hotel food for a change, I recommend Citra over the road, just make sure you book as they tend be booked up – even though we do see empty tables…. I am not sure their front of house knows what that are doing! They offer lovely vegetarian food, fresh homemade pasta and fish or chicken dishes, all healthy. Also at lunchtime they have a little patisserie wher you can get healthy sandwiches and their coffee is gorgeous.

The rooms at Sandhya are spacious, all with a sea view and balcony. There are no TV’s in the room which is a relief but there is WIFI if you need it and feel the need to watch Netflix and they have an allocated media room if you really feel like you need a TV. The beds are very comfortable and shower facilities and amenities (Spa Ceylon)  perfect. There is no clutter, just a peaceful tranquil space to relax.

We are right on the beach front, in fact literally on the beach and so close we thought the water could end up on the property but of course that is not the case. Just perfectly positioned for our delight every day, and delightful it was. The beach is excellent for beginner surfers, or to just beautiful splash around in which is what I did.

We had grand plans for Sri Lanka, a list of places we wanted to visit and activities to tick off but we relaxed so quickly here we didn’t do a thing and I am so thankful for that. There is always a TO DO LIST so it was nice to scrap that and just read, relax and soak up the sea and sun. If you do wish to explore you can do surfing, whale watching, visit  Galle Fort (20 mins drive away) or take more extensive trips across Sr Lanka.

I recommend Sri Lanka Drivers for transport as they are well priced and reliable.
